Scholin Outgoing President and Chief Executive Officer/Senior Scientist Autonomous Ocean Observing Environmental DNA (eDNA) Environmental Sample Processor Harmful Algal Blooms Offshore Environmental Monitoring Chris Scholin has spent more than three decades at the intersection of ocean science, molecular biology, and engineering, developing new technologies that are transforming how researchers observe and understand the ocean.Scholin arrived at MBARI in 1992 after earning his Ph.D. in biological oceanography from the MIT–Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program. His early research explored how molecular probes could be used to detect toxic and harmful algae in seawater. Working side by side with MBARI engineers, Scholin and his colleagues transformed those laboratory techniques into the Environmental Sample Processor (ESP), a robotic laboratory capable of autonomously collecting water samples and detecting organisms and the substances they produce.Scholin served as MBARI’s president and CEO from 2009 to 2025 before returning to research full time as a senior scientist. His experience gives him a distinctive perspective on both the science and engineering behind emerging ocean technologies and the institutional partnerships needed to move those technologies from an idea in the laboratory to tools that can operate autonomously at sea.
